BMW World Debut for Unrestricted Internet Use
BMW’s stand at Geneva will show a special vehicle which is fully Internet capable. Using a system BMW calls ConnectedDrive, users will be able to complete a vast array of online tasks by simply moving their mouse around. In this case the mouse isn’t the conventional type, but BMW’s iDrive knob.
Surfing the web is apparently really easy. Just like on a standalone machine like a laptop, Windows PC or Mac, Internet surfing involves typing in URLs to visit web addresses. This is possible. Possible also is saving favourite websites, just like on your desktop/ laptop. BMW has set up a special server to handle the influx of expected Internet use. They therefore guarantee fast connetions using EDGE technology, which is up to four times faster than GPRS. Unless there are extra DVD screens in the rear, Internet will shut itself down once the car exceeds 5km/h, a safety measure standard in most factory-fitted TV/ DVD in-car entertainment and information systems.
The technology is able to download Google Maps from other machines, which can then be used directly as navigation destinations. Although ConnectedDrive will be on view at the Geneva Motor Show, it only goes public towards the end of 2008 where customers will be able to tick an options box while ordering their cars. At the factory the system will be fitted before it gets to buyer.
World’s Tallest Structure Isn’t a Skyscraper
Radio towers and mine shafts have in many cases exceeded skyscraper heights, though of course these are supported by other means (such as secondary cables and surrounding soils). The Ursa platform is directly supported by its 4 primary tethers, though in an inverse way from how we normally understand load: the structure is held down rather than held up.
Not only is the Ursa platform the tallest structure in the world, it is also habitable: workers live day in and day out above the surface in modular attached dwelling spaces. Despite the enormity and expense of the structure, which weighs over 35 million pounds and cost 1.5 billion dollars to construct, these workers live in anything but luxurious conditions but are well-compensated for their efforts.
On a more somber note: one has to wonder what it says about our world that the tallest structure is dedicated to harvesting a non-renewable resource and can not be re purposed. Will this become another rogue micro nation when it is no longer of use, or simply be left as a monument to times past when it is no longer considered to be of value?
World's First Gold Gilded Porsche Boxter
Pforzheim is not only the stronghold of the jewellery and watch-making industry. The City of Gold is also the home of the first Gold Porsche. All that glitters in Pforzheim is gold. Thus, nobody is really surprised that fascinating projects and extraordinary ideas in gold originate from this region.
The Gold Porsche, which will be followed by a limited edition, was realized by the creative smithy, Bernd Hoeger a goldsmith and artist from Stuttgart, of VISUALIS last year. The VISUALIS CEOs commissioned the artist to gild a Porsche Boxster in 22 carat beaten gold.
Piece by piece, the manual work which took about a month, created a real one-of-a-kind as never seen before.
From the control elements such as the steering wheel and door knobs to the car body and alloy rims – the two seater is of an inestimable value. This car stands for pure lifestyle-enjoyment and is characterized by its even and fancy curves.
The extravagant sportscar is a highlight wherever it shows up, this year the car will be on show at a few special events like the fashion show with Strenesse and Glashütte. It not only attracts attention, but also makes the hearts of men and women beat faster. Such a precious piece of sportiness stimulates notions of envy. The status symbol is an eye-catcher and as the first of its kind, the prelude to a limited edition.
Nine further Porsche Models will undergo the same, unique refinement process to continue the creative project. They are not only a dream in gold; they will also represent the glamour and aesthetics of lifestyle with an overwhelming worthiness.
Curious people are already anxious to know who are going to be the owners of these magnificent automobiles. Interested buyers can pick their favorite Porsche to gild, or even have aftermarket accessories gilded to suit the car.

“The Porsche warranty is not affected” says Petra Köhler of VISUALIS. “since only the body will be changed. Of course if there are any changes under the hood, you always have to get an extra warranty, but that’s up to the buyers. VISUALIS offers just the refinement.”
“It’s a must for every fan.” was the final comment from VISUALIS CEO Sven Ulrich.
